Abstract: starting from the first quarter of the XIX to the beginning of the twentieth centuries in Russia, attitudes toward the form of land ownership and, in general, land and legal relations changed more than once. Nowadays, the land also becomes the object of special attention, sometimes it reaches confrontation and conflicts, which is an example of the recent events in Kabardino-Balkaria, the Republic of Dagestan, the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia. The problem is there and it needs to be solved, and for this it is necessary to study the causes, prerequisites and explore the process of formation and evolution of land ownership forms and land law relations, for example, in Dagestan. This, in our opinion, will make it possible not only to identify the causes but also to prevent the occurrence of various kinds of litigation and conflicts on this basis. In this article, the author drew attention to the peculiarities of land and legal relations in Dagestan of the XYII-XIX centuries both in feudal possessions and rural societies.
